Growth modification - Functional appliance

A functional appliance is fitted to reduce the prominence of upper incisors and to improve the way the teeth bite together. It usually consists of one block that fits over the top teeth and over the bottom teeth. By holding the lower jaw forward a force is generated which moves the upper teeth backwards and the lower teeth forwards. Furthermore, it stimulates the growth of the lower jaw and can therefore also favourably enhance the profile aesthetics.
As speaking is not possible with this appliance it is worn at home and during night, for about 6-12 months. It must be removed for eating and cleaning.

Further orthodontic treatment with fixed braces is usually needed after functional appliance treatment. This is because the activator has mainly a skeletal effect, while the fixed braces have only a dental effect.

Headgear

Headgear is an orthodontic appliance used to correct the bite and support proper jaw alignment and growth. It is only recommended for children whose jaw bones are still growing. Unlike braces, headgear is worn partially outside of the mouth.

Remember: teeth have never failed to move if elastics are worn as prescribed ! You will have some discomfort for the first few days, but as long as you continue to wear your elastics as directed, the discomfort will go away. Ibuprofen can help you through the first few days, if you are finding it uncomfortable. Poor elastic wear is the #1 cause of patients wearing their braces longer than predicted.
